Artistic Director’s Statement

From a very early age, the idea of other worlds has fascinated me. I admired the magical creation of spaces, creatures, and stories that were not real, but signified earthly places, people, and stories. I would create fables and fairytales, residing in fantasy until reality interrupted. Now, I still look upon fables with the utmost respect and a sound understanding of the human necessity that bears these storytelling traditions. We create these fantastic stories from a need to lend order to a world in which so many things seem beyond order, they offer explanations for phenomena that seem beyond reason, they present explanations for those things that are unexplained. As today’s humans inhabit a world glittered abundantly with technology and a wealth of access to information, I desire to create fantasy worlds to help explain our reality that is persistently mutable. Our world is changing so quickly and the art that I create attempts to seize a given moment of that change and lend it to the fantastic. I am interested in the magic we create everyday, the creatures we inhabit, the stories we live. My process is largely narrative and geared toward the creation of characters that oscillate between reality and myth. I create contemporary, psychological urban fables.
