Willie Brown
Willie Brown Jr. is a native of Springfield, Ma. He began his dance training at the age of 21, attending a small community college in his hometown. He later transferred to the University of Massachusetts, where he received a BFA in dance. Mr. Brown’s movement concepts have been heavily influenced by two unique collaborations with Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (Urban Bush Woman) on a re-staging of Ms. Pearl Primus’ Bushasche and honoring Katherine Dunham at The Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival in 2002. Throughout his career he’s studied and performed works by such noted choreographers as: Garth Fagan, Katherine Dunham, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Homer Avilla & Edisa Weeks, Augusto Soledade, Giovanni Luquini, Marilyn & Sekou Sylla and Abdel Salaam. Mr. Brown toured nationally & internationally with The Garth Fagan Dance Company for one season. He was noted in the 2007 Miami Dance festival as, “Being the most compelling dancer of the evening”. A highly regarded teacher of Afro-Brazilian dance, Mr. Brown has been a faculty member for the NHSDF (National High School Dance Festival) since 2005.
